Update on the Second Floor Project         

The second floor project will finish the second floor of the school building. It will add six classrooms, library, science lab, and teachers’ lounge. This year we plan to use three classrooms for the 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, and 7th/8th classes. Our goal was to start construction early in the summer. Despite the dedicated efforts of many brothers, delays happened due to various factors. The City took longer time to approve the plan and we had to negotiate with them some of the changes they demanded. Lawyers took longer time to agree on the terms of the contract. The contractor required the setup of an escrow account with the total value of the contract (about $300,000). Alhamdullilah all things have been worked out and the construction will start in sha’a Allah during the week of August 10.
The contract calls for the work to be finished in 75 days and puts a penalty on the contractor for every day beyond this period. So it is expected that the second floor will be ready for occupancy by the end of October. The elevator, however, will not be completed until the end of November because of the lead time needed to order it. We will apply for a temporary occupancy permit once the second floor is ready and we expect that it will be granted. However, there is a chance (although small) that the city will hold on giving the permit until the elevator is installed.

During construction, the workers will be using the entrance on the west side of the school, at the end of the hallway. There will be no traffic in the school lobby or hallway. All safety precautions will be taken to ensure that the students will be safe during construction. To minimize the inconvenience of the students during the early part of the construction when there may be a lot of noise, the school starting date has been delayed to Tuesday, September 8. Until the second floor is ready, the 3rd/4th class will be accommodated in the first room on the right side which was 2nd/3rd class last year. Eventually this room will be the computer lab. The 5th/6th and 7th/8th classes will be using the conference room and library of the Islamic center, with occasional use of the gym and current library (off the gym) when the gym is not used for other activities. We know that the temporary set up for these three classes will be inconvenient for the students and teachers, but we hope that every one understands the constraints we have and be patient during this period. In sha’a Allah when the second floor is ready, the students and teachers will like it a lot and will soon forget the inconvenience of the first couple of months.
